Lisle-sur-Tarn is a 13th century bastide, located on the banks of the Tarn in the heart of the gaillacois vineyards, enjoying a privileged location halfway between Toulouse and Albi. A place with unique arcades in the great south-west, a landscape organized between forest, plain and vineyard hills, make this village an attractive and welcoming bastide. The central square, renovated in 2000, is one of the largest arcaded squares in the south-west bastides (approximately 5,000 m²).
A former pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, the bastide was created after the Albigensian crusade. The Count of Toulouse, Raymond VII, wanted to create a city that replaced the 'castel' of Montaigut, whose crusaders had demanded destruction. The production and sale of wine and pastel created a rich market that a river port on the Tarn opened on northern Europe. Still a wine producer, Lisle-sur-Tarn is today an obligatory stop on the Circuit des Bastides.
